Men's Golf Closes Fall Season at Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate
November 07, 2020 | Men's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For its season finale, Mississippi State's men's golf team will travel to Vestavia Hills, Alabama for the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, Nov. 8-10.
Â
The event will take place on the par-70 course at Old Overton Country Club where all 14 SEC teams will play 18 holes each day. The Bulldogs will tee off at 12:20 p.m. C.T. on Sunday.
Â
"We are eager to compete this week in Birmingham," head coach Dusty Smith said. "Our team did a good job of taking ownership of their games during the past couple of weeks."
Â
The Bulldogs' lineup for the tournament will consist of sophomore Ford Clegg, senior Garrett Johnson, sophomore Benjamin Nelson and freshmen Loïc Ettlin and Hunter Logan.
Â
"It's important that we have a process centered mindset and focus on being a little bit better each day," Smith added. "We are not a finished product yet and shouldn't be. We have a lot of golf in front of us, and we need to make sure we take the necessary steps in order to be a championship team. I like the chemistry, the toughness and the grit of our team, and we look forward to finishing the Fall with some momentum heading into the off season."
Â
State's last appearance at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate came during the 2018-19 season where Johnson shot an impressive 69 in round one of the tournament and a 71 in the final round. Clarke and Clegg shot 70s in the opening round to help secure a sixth-place finish over the three-day tournament.
Â
The Bulldogs opened their season at the Blessings Collegiate in early October where Clegg paced the Dawgs, firing 215 to tie for eighth. Newcomer, Ettlin made his collegiate debut at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate two weeks ago and shot a season-low 67. Nelson also shot a 3-under 68 in that tournament tying his career low. The Bulldogs finished the tournament at 2-under 850.
