Student-Athlete Development Off to Strong Fall Start
October 09, 2020 | Student-Athlete Development
STARKVILLE – With a continued commitment to the holistic growth of all Mississippi State student-athletes, the Student-Athlete Development office began 2020 fall semester with a strong slate of programs throughout the month of September.
Â
Along with SAAC meetings and different forums, the office hosted three Life After Sport Initiatives programs for student-athletes to attend.
Â
BRANDED A BULLDOG
Branded a Bulldog is geared toward providing an opportunity for first-year Bulldogs to learn the art of personal branding. It also wants to help student-athletes recognize that they represent more than just themselves. They represent their university, families, hometowns, teams and so much more.
Â
What was said…
"I appreciated how thoroughly detailed the speakers talked about building a brand for myself and the importance of taking care of my business in the class and on the field."
Â
"The question, 'What do you want to leave at MSU?' really got me thinking about who I am and who I want to become after four years."
Â
"I learned about words I wanted to use for my brand and who I wanted to be later in life."
Â
FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP
Foundations of Leadership was created as a means to help student-athletes discover their core values, how these values guide their decision making, and learn the characteristics that makes good leaders.
Â
What was said…
"The part of the presentation that I found most valuable was the fact that we don't need to drop our values but instead need to stand by them and never forget them."
Â
"I found the discussion portions that involved all the other student-athletes most valuable, because it allowed me to see how others in positions similar to mine felt about certain statements."
Â
"I really enjoyed discussing our values and how that translates to being a good leader."
Â
PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTE
Professional etiquette is a program that focuses on preparing Mississippi State's fourth-year student-athletes for the professional world, including professional attire, job search strategies, resume building, navigating the job market virtually and more.
Â
What was said…
"I found the 12 tips about finding/preparing for job interviews and being successful in my career as the most helpful part of the presentation."
Â
"I think the idea of searching for your job based on your passion rather than the money you could make is very important."
Â
"The part about asking employers that turned you down why they did so you can use it as a learning experience was something that stuck out."
Â
In September 2019, Mississippi State rebranded its Life Skills department to Student-Athlete Development. MSU believes in the philosophy that an athletic department's priority is to enhance the student-athlete experience and that success, academically, athletically and personally, is a byproduct. Through the use of interactive workshops and experiential learning opportunities, Mississippi State will strive to provide student-athletes with experiences that will prepare them for success as they transition into college, continue through their collegiate careers, and embark on their professional careers.
