Davidson’s Two-Homer Day Leads Maroon To Game 1 Victory

Team Maroon won with eight runs while Team White scored four runs, and Team Black plated three.
STARKVILLE – Team Maroon used a six-run second inning to jump out to an early lead and never looked back on their way to a victory in the first game of Mississippi State softball's Fall World Series.
Team White scored four runs, and Team Black plated three. The Bulldogs are using a scoring system similar to the one used by Athletes Unlimited this summer. Mia Davidson had the highest individual score of the day with 140 points before MVP voting. Davidson went 5-for-6 on the day with a double, two home runs and five RBI.
"The bats came out hot in game one for a couple of the teams and some of the power numbers we were putting up on our hitting technology was off the charts," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "Emily Williams had another solid day in the circle and had big strikeouts to get herself out of a few jams. I'm looking forward to another action-packed game tomorrow to see who will win offseason bragging rights and the title."
Fa Leilua led the way for White with a 5-for-6 day at the plate, adding a double and a two-run homer of her own. Celeste Soliz drove in the team's remaining two runs.
Team Black scored on its first swing of the day when Anna Kate Segars homered just inside the right field foul pole. Segars finished the day 2-for-5 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. Madisyn Kennedy also drove in a run for Black.
In the circle, Emily Williams put together the most complete performance. She threw 6.0 innings while allowing one run and striking out four. Williams finished the day 103 points, third-highest total among all players before MVP voting. Alyssa Loza struck out a game-high five batters over 4.0 innings of work.
Freshman Addison Purvis threw 3.0 innings before rejoining Black as a hitter. Purvis struck out three and tossed two shutout innings then added a single and a walk at the plate. Her combined total would have been 95 points.
"It was good to see the team compete in a game like environment today," Ricketts added. "Utilizing a modified version of the Athletes Unlimited professional scoring system, it made every pitch, at bat, play, and inning matter with points on the line."
Defensively, two highlight-reel plays were made, both at third base. Montana Davidson started a triple play in the third inning, robbing her sister of extra bases. Montana snagged a line drive with runners on the corners, stepped on third for the second out and threw across to get the other runner tagging up to get out of the inning.
Paige Cook made a diving stop on Jackie McKenna's one-hopper down the third base line and threw across the diamond to beat her by a step.
Mia Davidson was named the game's first MVP by her teammates, earning an additional 60 points. Williams finished second in the voting for 40 points, and Leilua took third for 20 points.
Paige Cook drew a walk to open the inning and was advanced by consecutive singles from Brylie St. Clair and Fa Leilua. Celeste Soliz drove her in with a ground out to the second baseman.

Carter Spexarth then hit a two-run homer to center field. Kenley Hawk and Chloe Malau'ulu both singled before Quinn popped out for the first out. Davidson then hit a three-run homer to center field.
