Softball Closes Fall Practice With Annual World Series

The Bulldogs are adopting a scoring system similar to the one used by Athletes Unlimited this summer, and all games are closed to the public.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's softball program will compete in its annual Fall World Series on Thursday and Friday. This year's series will look a little different as the Bulldogs are adopting a scoring system similar to the one used by Athletes Unlimited this summer.
Play begins Thursday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. CT and continues Friday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. All games are closed to the public. Live updates will be provided on the Bulldogs Twitter feed (@HailStateSB).
The Bulldogs will be divided into three teams of hitters, with two teams playing defense together at the same time while the other hits. State's pitchers will make up a fourth team on their own. Teams will accumulate team points, but the overall champion of the two-game set will be an individual student-athlete.
"We are eager to compete this week in our annual fall World Series, Athletes Unlimited style," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "Overall, this has been the most competitive fall we have had, facing off against our own pitchers and hitters for seven straight weeks of live scrimmages."
Hitters earn individual points based on their performance at the plate. Singles are worth 10 points, doubles 20, triples 30, and a home run is worth 40. They also earn 10 points for a walk and stolen base. Players lose 10 points for being caught stealing and drop two points for committing an error.
Players on the team that wins each inning on the scoreboard will earn a bonus 10 points. Additionally, if a double play is turned, the three teams on the field (two hitter groups on defense and the pitchers) will all earn two points.
Pitchers earn four points for each out they record and an additional point for a strikeout. Throwing a scoreless inning is worth an additional 10 points, but allowing three or more runs in one frame will take away 10 points.
The Bulldogs scrimmaged using the system last week and the top three hitters were named captains for the Fall World Series. Those three will draft their remaining teammates on Monday afternoon.
"Overall I am very pleased about the way the team handled the fall," Ricketts added. "They dealt with new challenges and hurdles due to COVID-19 and embraced the changes they were asked to make to daily life as well as softball activities. It was a very mature approach, knowing our team's success and development depended on everyone doing the right thing. As coaches, we saw a lot of growth from the team, particularly the sophomore class, and also areas we can continue to improve."
Mia Davidson was the overall scoring leader and will lead Team Maroon. Anna Kate Segars will captain Team Black, and Celeste Soliz will captain Team White. Emily Williams was the top pitcher and State's pitching staff will play in Teal.
