Getting to know sophomore defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy
STARKVILLE -Â Each week during the 2020 football season, HailState.com will catch up with one football student-athlete to talk about football, personal favorites and everything that makes them unique. This week, we catch up with sophomore defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy.
Q:Â How did it feel to make your first collegiate career sack last season?
JC: It was really amazing, because it was against Ole Miss and someone that I really knew. [John Rhys Plumlee] was my quarterback in high school. That was a great moment at the end of the season, and I knew I could use that to build on heading into this year.
Â
Q:Â How was growing up in your family?
JC: I have an older brother, who is two years older than me. My younger brother is two years younger than me. Then, my two adopted sisters are younger. Having two younger sisters to look after is different than growing up with my brothers. And, [my sisters] have a lot of energy, are doing a lot of different things and it makes me happy to see that.
Â
Q:Â You also lettered in Basketball in High School. What made you stick to playing basketball?
JC: I would say I was a descent center. I was the No. 2 center on my team. I was probably the more physical player, our other center was probably the better scorer.Â
Â
Q: Who is the best basketball player on the football team?
JC: Probably me, but we haven't played a lot this year with everything that is going on [with COVID-19] right now.
Â
Q:Â Who is your sports idol and why?
JC: My godfather, Coach Red. He passed away my senior year [of high school], but he looked after me through my high school career. He took me under his wing, taught me how to go about things and really helped me get where I am today. With football, he was always making sure I was working out and getting my head right to be ready to go to college.
Â
Q:Â What is something that the fans probably do not know about you?
JC: I am a pretty quiet guy, but maybe they already know that about me. I don't do much talking or posting [on social media]. But, I want to give it my all for Mississippi State and this team.
Q:Â How did you get your nickname, Big Baby?
JC: My godfather gave it to me. He told me I was being a big baby at basketball practice one day and it just kind of stuck.
Q:Â What is your favorite part about being a defensive tackle?
JC: I am a physical guy and I like the contact. My goal every play is to get in the backfield and make tackles. I love to be physical up front, so I was going crazy at home [during quarantine]. I just wanted to call some guys up and meet up at the field, but we knew that we couldn't do that.Â
Q: Who's the most intense competitor on the team?Â
JC: It would have to be between Kobe [Jones] and Marquiss [Spencer]. Both of those guys are really competitive on the field.Â
Â
Q: What is your major?
JC: I am majoring in industrial technology. I would love to run my own business. I am really interested in building design and construction. That is what I would like to do after football.
Â
Q: If you could thank one person for helping you get where you are today, who would that be?
JC: My mother and my step dad. Your mother is going to be there for you in whatever you do. She has helped me in so many ways. Then, my step dad came in and really changed our lives. He is a big reason I am here right now, too, and he has always been there for our family.
