Soccer Remains Undefeated Through Four After Beating LSU
October 11, 2020 | Soccer
The Bulldogs found a win against the Tigers in their first Sunday match.
STARKVILLE – The Bulldogs of Mississippi State soccer found their first win at home of the season against LSU in a 2-1 bout with the Tigers on Sunday in a rainy match.
Â
Mississippi State (2-0-2) defeated LSU (0-3-0) to become the first Bulldog win on campus in 127 days. The last time any MSU team had won in Starkville was on March 8. It is the first time a State soccer team has started the conference slate undefeated through four games. It was the program's first defeat of LSU on their home turf.
Â
"It was a bit of a scrappy game," said head coach James Armstrong. "I wouldn't say that we played our best soccer today, but once again, there was tons of heart, tons of fight, tons of character in the girls. We had to go deep onto our bench, and everybody played a team-first performance today so I couldn't be prouder. It's a big three-point for us. The fans were fantastic; they were loud, they were energetic, and they did a great job in helping us throughout, but especially there towards the end. I'm really proud of the three points today."
Â
The Tigers were without several of their top players, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a fight.Â
Â
Onyi Echegini started things off for the Bulldogs with a goal serviced by Birna Jóhannsdóttir, knocking in her first goal of the season within the first ten minutes of the match. "I felt from that moment onward we had the advantage," said Echegini. The Tigers and Bulldogs had a combined 13 more shots until the buzzer sounded to end the first half. Â
After an LSU goal came in the 54th minute of the match, State struck back. The Bulldogs answered with just under 13 minutes to go in the second half. KK Pavatt provided a crucial pass to Hailey Farrington-Bentil that became an assist for the junior as Monigo Karnley found herself with a goal for the second game in a row.Â
Â
"I'm very proud to be the one who put the ball in the back of the net, but it was a team effort," said Karnley. "Everyone did their part."
Â
Freshman netminder Maddy Anderson had five saves during the match, and three student-athletes each had three shots in Echegini, Karnley, and Jóhannsdóttir. The Bulldogs outshot the Tigers 17-13 overall.
Â
The Bulldogs will see the pitch again on Friday, Oct. 16 in Bryan-College Station, Texas when they take on the Texas A&M Aggies. Kick is set for 6 p.m. with the match being streamed on SEC Network+. The Bulldogs will play four more games this season before heading to Orange Beach, Alabama for the SEC Tournament.
