STARKVILLE – Mia Davidson, who a year ago broke the SEC single-season home run record, was named to the conference's Preseason All-SEC team on Wednesday.
In 2019, the catcher/third baseman led the Bulldogs in batting average (.373), slugging percentage (.882), on-base percentage (.476), runs scored (52), hits (63), RBIs (64) and total bases (149).
"Mia has been a pillar for this program and in the Southeastern Conference since she stepped on campus," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "Her presence behind the plate and in the middle of our lineup continue to impress, and it is amazing that she is only halfway through her collegiate career. One of Mia's many strengths is how much work she puts in, and she continues to add to her game every single year."
During her sophomore season, Davidson made a run on the Bulldog career record book. Her 2019 campaign included MSU single-season records for home runs and slugging percentage, while her RBIs ranked second and her total bases were fourth. The Hillsborough, North Carolina, native finished second nationally in total home runs, and her slugging percentage ranked sixth in the nation.
Davidson earned NFCA Third Team All-American and First Team All-South Region honors. She was as top-10 finalist for USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year and earned her second First Team All-SEC and SEC Academic Honor Roll selections.
In 2018, Davidson was named SEC Freshman of the Year after starting all 61 games and earning SEC Freshman of the Week three times. She posted a 16-game hitting streak and 48 RBIs, which is tied for ninth in State's single-season record book. She finished the year as a top-10 finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA National Freshman of the Year award, and is the only Bulldog to ever be a finalist.
The Bulldogs were picked to finish tied for 12th in the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll released last week. MSU opens the 2020 campaign on Feb. 7 against Missouri State in the NFCA Leadoff Classic at 11 a.m. CT. State will follow that contest with an exhibition against Team USA that evening at 5 p.m.
