DOHA, Qatar – United States heptathlon champion Erica Bougard will wear the Red, White and Blue at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, this week.
Bougard competed at Mississippi State through 2016 and is one of four current or former Bulldogs at the championships. She is currently fifth in the IAAF World Rankings for combined events athletes.
The world championships will air live on the NBC family of networks. The meet can also be streamed online via NBC Sports Gold with a track and field pass, featuring both track and field event feeds.
The Mississippi native has won USATF national championships in the pentathlon in 2017 and 2018 and the heptathlon in 2018 and 2019. She also won the U.S. long jump title in 2017. Bougard competed at her first IAAF World Championships in 2018 in Birmingham, England, where she placed fifth in the pentathlon.
She returns to the world stage on Wednesday, Oct. 2, with the first gun in the 100m hurdles firing at 9:05 a.m. CT. She will compete in the high jump, shot put and 200m to wrap up the day. Bougard's second day on the track begins at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, with the long jump. She will then throw the javelin and close the event with the 800m. That will be run at 4:05 p.m. CT but 12:05 a.m. (Friday, Oct. 4) local time.
Bougard finished the 2019 U.S. Championships with 6,663 points. Her personal best is 6,725 points set in the 2018 season. That ranks third in American history.
She is seeking to become the first American medalist since Hyleas Fountain took home a silver medal from the 2008 championships with a 6,619-point performance. Prior to Fountain, an American had not medaled since U.S.-record-holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee won back-to-back golds in 1988 and 1992.
In her collegiate career, Bougard was a 16-time All-American, holding MSU's record for career honors for both men and women. She won the 2013 NCAA Championship in the indoor pentathlon.
The two-time SEC champion in the multi events earned SEC Field Athlete of the Year honors three times along with the conference's Freshman Field Athlete of the Year award. She won the Cliff Harper Trophy as the highest point scorer at the 2015 SEC Indoor Championships where she earned 21.25 points.
