STARKVILLE – A born and raised Mississippian, Katelyn Williams never doubted her chance to play at the school she grew up rooting for. She has loved every second in Starkville where she is the only in-state freshman on the roster. Along with senior Hayden Oswalt, who is from Clinton, Mississippi, she is surrounded by the vast diversity of a team made up from out of the state and also, out of the country.
"It's kind of interesting to have people from all kinds of areas." Williams said. "They say things that I've never heard before, and I say certain things that they've never heard before. It's cool to see where they come from and that they get to see where I come from. I'm going to be really sad when the seniors leave. That means I'll be the only Mississippian."
With her home being less than two hours away, in Brandon, it's easy for Williams to take a trip home, whether it be for a day or a weekend. During her free time, one of Williams' favorite things to do is to bring her teammates to her hometown.
"I brought Madison Rust down to where I live, and she realized it was kind of just a bunch of trees everywhere, but honestly she liked it," Williams said. "It's just nice to be able to bring people who have never been to where I live, so that they get to see how it is over there and where I come from."
Having her family so close has been extremely convenient for both Williams and her parents.
"They've come to every game we've had. They love coming to watch the whole team," Williams said.
Her parents aren't the only ones who have supported her soccer career. Williams' grandfather has always supported and guided her soccer career and plays a huge role in her life.
"He would always come to all of my games," she said. "He would always tell me that he knew I was good enough to keep going and play in college, and any meal we were at together, he would always talk about my soccer career excelling into college."
Williams has plenty of goals for her first season. One of her biggest is to see her team beat a ranked opponent. On top of that, the young midfielder is wanting to make it to the SEC tournament and beyond. Williams wants to see the Bulldogs back in the NCAA tournament.
"Getting on the field is so exciting," Williams said. "I love being a part of this team. I want to have success for this team, and I want the best for all of us. I want to go to the tournaments at the end of the season, and I want to help my teammates out getting there."
