PERTHSHIRE, Scotland – Former Mississippi State All-American golfer Ally McDonald has been selected to Team USA's roster for the prestigious Solheim Cup.
McDonald, who was tabbed the first alternate for the squad, will be replacing Stacy Lewis in the lineup after Lewis withdrew due to injury. U.S. Solheim Cup Captain Juli Inkster made the selection after McDonald's strong play the last two years.
"Ally has meant so much to our program as not only a stellar player, but a representative of our values as the Mississippi State Women's Golf program," head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "Her competitive drive and work-ethic has propelled her to great heights. She has a special type of talent, bringing energy to team USA that will grow into a competitive advantage. Some players are just born to do what they do, she is absolutely one of those blessed with the ability, spirit and motivation to win no matter the stage."
The Gleneagles Hotel, PGA Centenary Course will be the site for this year's competition, which will run Sept. 13-15. The course is 6,434 yards and playing off Par 72.
McDonald and Team USA will be going up against Team Europe in a match play format. Team USA will look to extend its win streak in the series to three after claiming the 2015 and 2017 editions. All time, the Red, White and Blue holds a 10-5 advantage against Europe.
"I didn't want to make the team this way, but when Juli told me what was going on with Stacy, I was ready to step into either role, if that was being here and being part of the experience or being ready to tee it up," said McDonald. "It was just mentally preparing for either scenario. I'm obviously very excited to play. This was a goal of mine to play on this team."
This marks McDonald's first time competing in the Solheim Cup. The two-time WGCA All-American is now in her fourth year on the LPGA Tour. The Fulton, Mississippi, native recorded 15 top-20 finishes during the qualifying period for the event earn the opportunity to compete.
During her time at Mississippi State, McDonald racked up five top-10 finishes and all but one of her finishes being in the top 25. As well as having two wins in a row at the Schooner Fall Classic and the Old Waverly Invite, she set the course and program record by shooting a 63 in the final round at the Schooner. She also lead the program to the first NCAA Championship competition of any University in the state of Mississippi in 2014 only to go back in 2015.
