McBride Edges Arop for Canadian Title, Bougard Leads U.S. Heptathlon

DES MOINES, Iowa/MONTREAL – Mississippi State shone brightly at the Athletics Canada Championships for the second year in a row with Bulldogs dominating the men's 800m.
A day after he ran the top qualifying time in the semifinals, State's Marco Arop finished second to MSU alum Brandon McBride for the Canadian title. Arop finished in 1:46.93, while McBride crossed the line in 1:44.63.
Both hold qualifying times for the IAAF World Championships from earlier this season. McBride broke the Canadian outdoor record, while Arop set the nation's indoor record in 2019. The pair will be eligible to represent their country at the World Championships along with MSU's Anderson Peters who will throw the javelin for Grenada.
At the USATF Championships, former Bulldog Erica Bougard leads the heptathlon after the first day of competition with 3,937 pts. Bougard won three of the four events on the day and set a personal best in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 12.78.
Curtis Thompson finished fourth in the javelin after winning the event a year ago. The Florence, New Jersey, native threw 76.56m (251-2) to top all 2019 collegians in the field.
Logan Boss did not record a mark in the high jump.
