DES MOINES, Iowa – Mississippi State's athletes got off to a strong start on the first day of the USATF Championships on Thursday evening.
Tiffany Flynn placed fifth in the triple jump, finishing as the top amateur. The Bulldogs' school record holder jumped 13.35m (43-9.75) on her first attempt, marking her best performance since she broke the MSU school record at the SEC Outdoor Championships in May.
Flynn's leap was the sixth-farthest of her career and gives her 10 marks that are better than the No. 2 triple jumper in school history.
On the track, Dejon Devroe clocked the second-fastest 800m of his Bulldog career to finish eighth and advance to Friday night's semifinals which will air on NBCSN at 6:32 p.m. CT. Devroe crossed the line in 1:47.62, just shy of the personal-best 1:47.50 that he ran at the Crimson Tide Invitational in April.
Rasheed Tatham narrowly missed advancing to the 400m hurdles semifinals. Tatham posted the No. 16 time, crossing the line faster than the final automatic qualifier, in 51.47. Unfortunately, he finished fourth in his heat with the top three automatically advancing and missed the final time qualifier by 0.63 seconds.
Sarah Blake competed in the javelin and finished 10th, throwing 48.53m (159-2). Stephen Jones ran the 3000m steeplechase in 8:55.55, finishing 22nd.
In addition to Devroe competing on Friday, Marco Arop will run the 800m semifinals at the Athletics Canada Championships in Montreal, Quebec, alongside former Bulldog Brandon McBride at 6:30 p.m.
