STARKVILLE – Mississippi State landed 59 Bulldogs on the 2018-19 First-Year Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, its highest total since the 2014-15 academic year (61), the league office announced on Tuesday.
Baseball's College World Series squad led the way with 11 selections, tied with Missouri and South Carolina for the most in the SEC in that sport.
Women's track and field followed with 10 honorees, including three women who broke MSU records this season. The men's squad landed seven athletes on the honor roll after finishing in among the Top 15 for the fourth time in five years.
The Bulldog softball team posted seven selections to the honor roll while football added five more. Men's golf saw three honorees while the women's program had two.
Following its first return to the NCAA Tournament since 2008-09, men's basketball saw three players tabbed to the honor roll. State's women's basketball team added one selection after its run to the Elite Eight and undisputed SEC Championship season.
Men's tennis capped its second straight SEC Championship season with a pair of honorees, and soccer earned one recognition after making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Volleyball's four honorees and women's tennis' trio rounded out the MSU selections.
The First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2018-19 academic year.
The following criteria must be met to be eligible for the honor roll: (1) A student‐athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student‐athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student‐athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student‐athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student‐athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non‐remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student‐athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
