STARKVILLE – With one collegiate season under his belt, Tyriq Horsford is headed to the U20 Pan American Games to represent Trinidad and Tobago.
The Mississippi State freshman is one of 15 athletes selected to wear the red and black in San Jose, Costa Rica, on July 19-21.
Earlier this year, Horsford threw 71.45m (234-5) to win gold at the U20 CARIFTA Games. That mark the second of five consecutive meets with a personal best as Horsford exploded onto the national leaderboard. He finished the collegiate season ranked second nationally and was the top freshman.
"We are proud to see Tyriq representing his country once again," head coach Chris Woods said. "He has a very bright future at Mississippi State, competing with the best in the country. He's had a very strong season so far, and we want to see him continue to improve over his summer competitions."
Horsford was part of State's sweep of the men's javelin program, finishing third as the Bulldogs became just the 15th program ever to go 1-2-3 in any event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The Parlatuvier, Trinidad and Tobago, native will compete at 7:40 p.m. CT on Saturday, July 20. He is also scheduled to throw at the NACAC U23 Championships on Sunday, July 7 at 9:05 a.m. in Queretaro, Mexico.
