AUSTIN, Texas – With the conclusion of the men's competition on Friday night at the NCAA Championships, Mississippi State's men finished among the top 15 teams in the country once again.
Placing 11th with 24 points, the Bulldogs picked up their fourth top-15 finish in the last five years. That score was the third-highest in program history behind a 10th-place finish a year ago with 26 points and a 27-point showing in 1982 when MSU was 17th.
"The men's program has had an exceptional, very historic year," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "I am happy to have had the opportunity to lead the program this season. I'm very confident we will continue to build on our successes this year, especially as we turn toward the summer season and next year."
The Bulldogs swept the men's javelin podium, marking just the 11th sweep in any event in NCAA Outdoor Championships history and only the second in that event. State also advanced athletes to the semifinals in the 400m hurdles, 800m and 3000m steeplechase.
"It's been a really great year, an exceptional year," Woods added. "It's been a really special year for me and for the senior class."
MSU's men put together the most-decorated outdoor season in program history, claiming more SEC Athletes of the Week and USTFCCCA National Athletes of the Week than ever before along with four All-American honors.
Anderson Peters was once again in the hunt for The Bowerman after becoming MSU's first semifinalist in program history a year ago. Peters was named the USTFCCCA South Region Co-Field Athlete of the Year, and throws coach April Thomas was named the regions' Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
State put six men on the podium at the SEC Championships, the most since the Bulldogs earned eight medals in 2003. They finished the conference meet with 57 points, their highest total since 2012. MSU's eighth-place finish was its best since 2015.
Fifteen men qualified for the NCAA East Prelims, tying the 2018 team's program record. The Bulldogs broke two school records, including the oldest, untied, Championship-event record in the program's record book.
Stephen Jones broke Simeon Kigen's steeplechase record that had stood since 1982 by one second. Peters broke his own school record with the fourth-best throw in the world this season (86.62m, 284-2) at the Championships. In all, nine new marks landed in the men's all-time Top Five this year.
