STARKVILLE – Marco Arop, who holds both the Mississippi State and Canadian national record in the indoor 800m, will represent his country at the 2019 Pan American Games, Athletics Canada announced on Wednesday.
The Edmonton, Alberta, native is one of 46 track and field athletes that will travel to Lima, Peru, in August as part of the Canadian delegation. The Pan Am Games feature 39 sports and 61 disciplines. A total of 6,680 athletes are expected to compete from 41 nations.
"I really enjoyed Pan Am juniors in Peru two years ago," Arop said. "Returning for the Pan American Games has been a goal of mine since then. I'm looking forward to competing with and against some great athletes. Most of all, I'm just really happy and grateful to have the opportunity to represent Canada once again."
Arop will run the semifinals of the 800m on Friday, Aug. 9 at 3:50 p.m. CT. The finals will be the following day at 4:45 p.m.
The sophomore is coming off a season that saw him earn his second career NCAA runner-up finish in the 800m and third consecutive SEC runner-up finish across both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He broke the Canadian national indoor record at the Tiger Paw Invitational with a run of 1:45.90.
""This is one of many national teams Marco has made and hopefully will continue to make in his career," head coach Chris Woods said. "Everyone on our staff is extremely proud. Whenever you have an opportunity to represent your country it's a great honor. We're looking forward to watching him race and make our university and Canada proud."
Arop will be joined by former Bulldog and Olympian Brandon McBride (2013-16). McBride holds the Canadian national record in the outdoor 800m and has an edge on Arop in the MSU outdoor record book by a quarter of a second.
The duo have a history of representing their nation together. Arop finished second just behind McBride's gold medal performance at the 2018 NACAC Championships in Toronto, Ontario. Arop won the Athletics Canada Championships a year ago by 0.27 seconds with McBride finishing second.
While hosting the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, the Canadians collected 27 medals. A total of 38 of the 90 athletes from Canada's 2018 team went on to compete in the Rio Olympic Games in 2016. Arop is one of 28 first-time Pan American competitors for the country.
