Next Stop Greece: Perry to Represent Team USA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Mississippi State forward Reggie Perry will don the Red, White and Blue for USA Basketball at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup announced Thursday by the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee.
Perry is one of five players on Team USA's 2019 U19 World Cup Roster who played college basketball during the 2018-19 season. He joins Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State), Kira Lewis, Jr. (Alabama), Isaac Likekele (Oklahoma State) and Trevion Williams (Purdue). High school players from the 2019 and 2020 classes represent the remaining seven roster spots.
Perry and his teammates will travel to Greece on June 24, and the 16-team event will take place from June 29-July 7. Team USA is in Group A and will play round robin contests with Lithuania (June 29), New Zealand (June 30) and Senegal (July 2). After group phase play is complete, the event's round of 16 will be held on July 3 followed by the quarterfinals on July 5, the semifinals on July 6 and finals on July 7.
"I'm very honored and blessed with this opportunity to represent my country," Perry said. "This experience means a lot to me and my family and is the beginning of something miraculous."
Perry, an All-SEC Freshman Team selection, had the opportunity to showcase his talents at the 2019 NBA Draft Combine, the 2019 NBA G League Elite Camp and workouts for several NBA team earlier this summer. He came away with 11.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and eight of his team-leading nine double-doubles versus SEC opponents. Perry piled up season's best with 21 points at Ole Miss and against South Carolina in February.
"What an incredible honor for Reggie to play for Team USA and be selected as one of 12 players to represent our country," head coach Ben Howland said. "Extremely proud and happy for him. Reggie is a fantastic player and will be a great leader for his team."
Team USA is led by head coach Bruce Weber (Kansas State) along with assistant coaches Mike Hopkins (Washington) and LeVelle Moton (North Carolina Central). Members of the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee include chairman Matt Painter (Purdue), Shane Battier (Athlete Representative), Tony Bennett (Virginia), Ed Cooley (Providence) and Sean Miller (Arizona).
Mississippi State's most recent affiliations with Team USA includes Tang Hamilton (2005), Jarvis Varnado (2009), Arnett Moultrie (2009), Malik Newman (2013, 2014), Robert Woodard II (2015) and Rodney Hood (2016).
Woodard II's U16 team captured gold at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championships in Argentina whereas Varnado earned a bronze medal at the 2009 World University Games. Newman claimed a pair of gold medals and was a two-time MVP at the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 and 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships, respectively.
Mississippi State posted a 23-11 record last season and secured the program's 11th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bulldogs have dialed up 48 victories over the last two seasons which is tied for second-most in program history over a two-year span and fourth among SEC schools during that span.
