STARKVILLE - Following another record-setting year in the classroom, all of Mississippi State's varsity sports exceeded the national four-year 930 benchmark in the NCAA's annual report of Academic Progress Rates (APR).
All 13 programs eclipsed the benchmark by at least 31 points with 11 teams scoring at least 974 or better. In the latest multi-year rate, the Bulldogs' women's tennis team posted a perfect 1,000 for the third straight year to lead the way. Men's cross country paced the men's sports with a 987.
"Our standard of excellence in competition and in the classroom continues to reach new heights," Mississippi State Director of Athletics John Cohen said. "The NCAA Academic Progress rates are a direct reflection of our student-athletes' daily commitment to academic success on the path to graduation. I congratulate each of them, as well as our coaches and academic support staff, on this proud achievement. It truly is a collective and dedicated effort."
Five squads tied or exceeded their all-time four-year APR scores, including women's tennis (1,000), softball (997), women's track and field (985), football (976) and men's basketball (974).
Men's basketball jumped 10 points from the previous year, while volleyball produced its second-highest score ever with a mark of 984. Women's basketball scored a 987 for the second straight year, tying its second-highest score in the formula's history. Soccer (987) saw an increase of 17 points from the previous year to produce its best score since the 2011-12 academic year multi-rate.
To compete in the 2019-20 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year APR. NCAA members chose the 930 standard because that score predicts, on average, a 50 percent graduation rate for teams at that APR level. Additionally, teams must earn at least a 930 four-year APR to avoid penalties.
The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a measure of classroom performance related to all participating NCAA Division I athletic programs. It is considered to be the NCAA's "real-time" snapshot of academic progress, graduation and retention.
