STARKVILLE – After anchoring Mississippi State's javelin program for the past two years, sophomore Anderson Peters and assistant coach April Thomas have earned regional award recognition from the USTFCCCA.
Thomas was named the South Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year for her work with the Bulldogs' javelin trio that holds the top three marks in the NCAA this year. Peters added South Region Co-Field Athlete of the Year to his already impressive resume. Both are MSU's first award winners in their respective categories.
"I'm just ecstatic for April," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "It's an awesome accomplishment for Coach Thomas, and Anderson is extremely well-deserving as well."
Thomas coached Peters, Tyriq Horsford and Curtis Thompson to a sweep of the SEC podium, scoring 24 of State's 57 points at the conference meet, then followed that with a clean sweep at the NCAA East Prelims. #JavU boasts 28 of the top 30 throws in the NCAA this year while holding spots No. 1-23.
"This shows how much her hard work has paid off," Woods continued. "I couldn't be happier. There's not another assistant in the country more deserving, not just this year but for everything she's done for this program since she's been here."
State's trio marks the 14th time a team has placed three athletes in the NCAA men's javelin final. Last year, MSU became the first program in NCAA history to see three men throw the javelin over 80.00m.
Peters, a candidate for The Bowerman, holds 10 of the top 25 throws in NCAA history and is No. 6 in the world in the javelin this year. Excluding fouls, each of his attempts is among the top-25 throws of the year, including the top 12 marks.
The reigning NCAA champion, Peters will attempt to become just the third MSU athlete in any event to win consecutive NCAA titles when he throws at the Championships next week. The St. Andrews, Grenada, native holds facility record at all but one venue he threw at this year (Texas). He broke NCAA East Prelims meet record and broke SEC Championship record for second straight year.
