Peters Named to Pre-Conference Bowerman Watchlist

STARKVILLE, Miss. – With a week remaining before the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Anderson Peters has made another watchlist for The Bowerman, collegiate track and field's highest honor.
The Bowerman was created in 2009 and is given annually to the top male and female athlete in track and field by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Peters finished as a semifinalist for the award in 2018 and was Mississippi State's first ever semifinalist.
Peters, who was named MSU's Male Athlete of the Year for 2018-19, holds all of the top nine throws in the javelin in the NCAA this year. He holds 11 of the top 15 throws in the nation, with only teammate Curtis Thompson keeping him from a clean sweep.
Excluding fouls, every one of his 13 attempts ranks among the top 20 marks this year. Peters boasts 10 of the top 25 marks in college history. Six of those throws have come in just three meets of competition this season.
The St. Andrews, Grenada, native broke his own national record with the No. 3 throw in the world this season, tossing the implement 86.07m (282-4). His mark ranks third in NCAA history and is nearly 8m farther than Thompson (78.68m, 258-2), who ranks second in the NCAA this year.
"I'm glad to see he's still being considered," throws coach April Thomas said. "He's worked incredibly hard for it and is very deserving. It's good to see a thrower from any school being recognized and getting national attention."
As a freshman, Peters captured the NCAA javelin title in June with a meet-record toss of 82.82m (217-9) on his third throw in Eugene, Oregon.
In 2018, he captured the javelin crown at the 2018 NACAC Championships and earning bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Of the 19 prior winners, seven have gone on to become Olympians. The men's winner has come from the SEC in four of the past five years.
No thrower has ever won the award, though multi-event athlete and Olympian Ashton Eaton – who holds the world record in both the outdoor decathlon and indoor heptathlon – claimed it in 2010.
