LOUSIVLLE, Ky. – As Mississippi State softball gears up for postseason play at the Seattle Regional, a trio of Bulldogs were honored as members of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region teams, the organization announced Thursday.
Sophomore Mia Davidson and junior Fa Leilua were both selected to the NFCA All-South Region First Team, while senior Kat Moore rounded out the honors with a spot on the NFCA All-South Region Second Team.
This is Davidson second consecutive NFCA All-Region selection, but her first on the first team. Leilua is also earning her second all-region accolade, but her first as a Bulldog. She was tabbed to the All-West Region teams at Arizona State. Moore is taking home her first NFCA All-Region team accolade.
This is the second consecutive year that Mississippi State has had three Bulldogs honored by the NFCA and is the first time since Caroline Seitz in 2014 that a Bulldog has earned a first-team selection. It is also the first time that Mississippi State has boasted multiple first-time honorees since Sam Lenahan and Ka'ili Smith in 2012.
Since 1997, Mississippi State now has 44 total NFCA All-Region honors spread out amongst 28 players. Eighteen of those have come during head coach Vann Stuedeman's eight seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs. This is also the 15th season that MSU has received multiple NFCA All-Region honors.
Turning in one of the most impressive slugging performances in SEC history, Davidson enters the postseason as the Southeastern Conference leader in home runs per game (0.47), home runs (24), runs batted in per game (1.17) and total bases (144). The two-time First Team All-SEC honoree is also the NCAA Division I leader in home runs and home runs per game.
Her 25 home runs have set a new Mississippi State sophomore record and single-season record. The mark has tied Georgia's Alex Hugo (2014) and Alabama's Kelly Kretschman (1998) for the SEC's single-season record.
The Hillsborough, North Carolina, native begins NCAA Regional play ranking second in the SEC with 62 RBI, becoming just the third Bulldog to record 60 RBI over a single season, and a .917 slugging percentage. The Bulldog leader at the plate, Davidson also holds team highs in batting average (.389), on-base percentage (.490), runs scored (50), hits (61), and walks (22).
Davidson is the lone player in the SEC to record at least 60 RBI, 60 hits and 50 runs scored this season. She is just one of six players nationally to accomplish this feat.
Behind the dish, Davidson is lethal with four pick offs and 12 runners caught stealing over her sophomore season. She holds a .981 fielding percentage, committing just six errors, coupled with 280 putouts and 33 assists.
Making a splash in her debut season in Maroon and White, Leilua led Mississippi State and all SEC designated players/utility athletes with a .387 average and eight home runs over league play to earn First Team All-SEC honors earlier this month.
Leilua was one of two Bulldogs to start all 54 games this season as she finished second on the squad with a .367 batting average and .807 slugging percentage. The junior added 42 runs scored, 61 hits and 52 RBI.
The Hawthrone, California, native enters the postseason with 22 total home runs, which set a new Mississippi State junior record and ranks second in single-season history behind only her teammate Mia Davidson. The mark is good forth a tie for fifth in SEC single-season history.
Leilua currently ranks second in the SEC in home runs per game (0.41) and home runs, third in total bases (134) and fifth in slugging percentage. Seeing action as a designated player and in the outfield, Leilua turned in a perfect fielding percentage over her debut season, recording nine putouts.
Saving her best for last, Moore adds her first NFCA accolade of her career to go along with her First Team All-SEC selection. The Holly Springs, Mississippi, native slugged a career-high 11 home runs over the regular season to set a new Mississippi State senior record. Seven of her 11 home runs came in conference play, which led all SEC outfielders.
The centerfielder turned in a .340 average at the plate with 34 runs scored and ranked third on the team with 54 hits. Moore turned in a .635 slugging percentage over her senior season and led Mississippi State with four triples. She set a career high with 41 RBI.
Defensively, Moore recorded 65 putouts with four assists form the outfield. She also turned in a SportsCenter Top 10 performance with an athletic, home run-robbing grab against Memphis on April 10.
The Bulldogs begins their road to the Women's College World series tomorrow as they open the Seattle Regional against Seattle at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
