STARKVILLE — Ally McDonald left her mark at Mississippi State in her four-year tenure, and she's doing just the same in her short 3-year LPGA career.
McDonald tied for sixth in the first of five major championships, the ANA inspiration at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, which is a personal best in her LPGA career.
"One of my major goals this year was to compete better in our majors," said McDonald. "After the first round, I found myself in unfamiliar territory being the solo first round leader. I am proud of myself for battling and staying in the tournament for a top 10 and my best finish in a major."
She came out in the first round on fire with a 68, 4-under par which gave her a solo lead at the end of the first round. In round two, she steadied her nerves with an even par at the 6,799-yard championship course.
She posted a 74 in the third round which put her at 2-under par overall, but she gained some ground in the final round with a 2-under par 70. She posted a 284 total, 4-under par which helped her to a tie for sixth.
She was a standout at Mississippi State earning multiple honors including three-time All-SEC accolades, two-time WGCA All-America honors, and three-time SEC player of the week nominations. She also made her mark in the record books holding the title for most rounds played, lowest stroke average, and most par or better rounds, to name a few. During her time at State, she won five individual titles and led her team to four team titles. She also helped her team to two NCAA championships in 2013 and 2014.
McDonald is currently ranked 83rd in the LPGA.
