State’s Late Rally Falters as No. 7/5 LSU Evens Series; Sunday’s Finale Moved to 1 p.m. CT
April 06, 2019 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Clawing its way back into the game to take a lead into the seventh inning, Mississippi State (24-13, 3-8 SEC) gave up three runs in the top of the seventh as No. 7/5 LSU (32-8, 10-4 SEC) evened the series with a 10-9 victory on Saturday at Nusz Park.
Sixth-inning home runs by sophomore Mia Davidson and senior Kat Moore put the Bulldogs out in front, 9-7, for the first time in the contest, but LSU answered with two home runs of its own in the seventh to jump back in front. Mississippi State got the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, but Tiger pitcher Shelbi Sunseri shut the door with her fourth save of the season.
At the plate, MSU was led by Moore, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Moore slugged two home runs Saturday for her first multi-home run game of her career. Davidson also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI.
The Bulldogs used three pitchers in the contest as freshman Grace Fagan was tagged with the loss to fall to 5-6 on the season. The left-hander tossed four innings and allowed four runs off five hits and three walks with one strikeout.
LSU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with a Shemiah Sanchez three-run home run. Mississippi State answered in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally. After junior Fa Leilua singled to left, Moore knocked an RBI single off the top of the wall in left center to slice the Tiger lead to 3-1.
The Tigers found breathing room in the top of the third as a Savannah Stewart triple, Bulldog throwing error and a wild pitch manufactured two runs for LSU. LSU pushed its lead to 6-1 with an RBI double to left center from Amanda Doyle in the top of the third.
State battled back in the bottom of the third as senior Emily Heimberger led off with walk before Davidson slugged her first home run of the game with a two-run bomb to straightaway center. After Moore reached base safely with help of an LSU error, junior Candace Denis doubled to right center to plate a run and cut LSU's lead to 6-4.
Michaela Schlattman led off the fifth with a solo home run to center to push the Tiger lead back up to three runs, but the Bulldogs answered once again in the home half of the inning. Moore sparked the two-run inning with a solo home run off the scoreboard. Denis singled to center, stole second and moved to third on an LSU error on the steal attempt. Sophomore Carter Spexarth knocked a pinch-hit single through the left side to pull the Bulldogs within one, 7-6.'
Mississippi State took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. After Heimberger led off with a single to center, Davidson put the Bulldogs out in front with a two-run homer to center. Moore pushed MSU's lead to 10-9 lead with her second solo home run of the game with a bomb to left center.
LSU responded in the top of the seventh, leading off with a Doyle home run to center. After Schlattman doubled to right center, Amber Serrett homered to center field to give LSU a 10-9 lead.
The Bulldogs got the tying run in scoring position as freshman Kayla Boseman knocked a one-out, pinch-hit double up the middle, but Sunseri earned the save with a strikeout and fly ball to left field to even up the series.
SUNDAY'S FINALE MOVED TO 1 P.M.
Due to Sunday's chance of inclement weather, Sunday's finale against LSU has been moved to a 1 p.m. CT first pitch. The game will be streamed live digitally through WatchESPN with a delayed replay aired on ESPNU at 3 p.m. CT.
HEIMBERGER'S HOT STREAK CONTINUES
Emily Heimberger extended her hit streak to six consecutive games as she turned in her fifth multi-hit contest over that span. Over the last six games, Heimberger has knocked 12 total hits.
THUNDER STRIKES
For the fourth time in her Bulldog career, Mia Davison has knocked multiple home runs in the same game. She now stands tied for second in MSU single-season history with Iyhia McMichael (2003) with 18 home runs. She is one away from tying her own single-season record that she set last year.
Davidson now has 37 career home runs to her credit, which ties McMichael (2001-04) and Caroline Seitz (2014-17) for second place in Mississippi State history. She is seven homers away from tying Kellie Wilkerson's (1999-02) school record.
