STARKVILLE – After claiming another international medal, Tyriq Horsford threw a personal best to finish fourth at the National Relays and cap off a week that earned him SEC weekly honors.
Horsford opened his week competing for Trinidad and Tobago in the CARIFTA Games held in the Cayman Islands. He threw a then-personal-best 71.45m (234-5) to win his fifth career CARIFTA Games gold medal while competing in the U-20 division.
MSU put on a clinic on the javelin runway at the National Relays, and Horsford was no exception. While teammates Anderson Peters and Curtis Thompson finished first and second with all 10 of the top-10 marks of the week, Horsford quietly threw a personal best for the third consecutive meet.
On his fourth throw, Horsford launched the implement 72.31m (237-3). That throw ranks 10th nationally and fifth in the SEC. His mark leads all freshmen in the conference. Only Peters, Thompson, Trevor Danielson (Texas) and Cade Antonucci (Auburn) recorded better marks this week.
Horsford is the first Bulldog track and field athlete to earn multiple Freshman of the Week awards from the conference office.
MSU will compete at the SEC Outdoor Championships next week. This year's championships will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 9-11.
