OKLAHOMA CITY - With the end of the regular season on the horizon, Mississippi State catcher Mia Davidson was announced as one of 26 finalists for USA Softball's 2019 Collegiate Player of the Year.
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, which is entering its 18th season, recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female collegiate softball players across the country.
Davidson was one of just four sophomores to earn a spot as a finalist. The Southeastern Conference boasted eight total selections as finalists for the award. Davidson is the first Bulldog to be selected as a finalist for the award since All-American Chelsea Bramlett made the top 10 cut in 2010.
The reigning SEC Freshman of the Year picked up right where she left off over her sophomore campaign as she leads all of Division I softball with 23 home runs and a 1.008 slugging percentage.
Davidson has set new Mississippi State records for most home runs in a single-game with three against No. 5 Washington on Feb. 14 as well as the Mississippi State sophomore home run and single-season records. Her 23 home runs rank tied for fourth in SEC single-season history and are the most by any SEC student-athlete since 2016.
A First Team All-SEC selection a season ago, Davidson also leads the league with 133 total bases, while ranking second with 55 RBI, the most ever recorded by a Bulldog sophomore. She also ranks third in the SEC in batting average (.424) and fourth in hits (56), seventh in runs scored (44) and ninth in on-base percentage (.524)
She is the lone student-athlete in the conference with to record at least 50 RBI, 55 hits and score 40 runs.
Just a lethal behind the plate, Davidson has thrown our nine would-be base stealers to rank fourth in the conference and leads the SEC with four pick offs.
The list of 26 finalists will be narrowed to the 10 finalists on May 8. The top three finalists will be announced on May 22. The 2019 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 28.
