STARKVILLE – Another outstanding week on the javelin runway led to another set of weekly national and conference honors for Mississippi State's Anderson Peters.
The reigning NCAA and SEC javelin champion was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week and SEC Co-Field Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row on Tuesday. Peters' honor comes after posting one of the best performances in NCAA history at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday, which included him shattering the school record in the event.
On his first throw, the sophomore Peters broke the school record by throwing the implement 84.73m (278-0.0), which landed him atop the world leaderboard in 2019. He bested that on his third attempt, throwing a lifetime-best 86.07m (282-4.0) in Austin. By surpassing the 83.00m mark, Peters met the standard set to qualify for the 2019 IAAF World Championships, held Sept. 28-Oct. 6 in Doha, Qatar.
The Grenadian national record holder put together an impressive series, with five of his six throws ending up in the top-15 of the collegiate record book, including what is now the third farthest mark in collegiate history (86.07m/282-4.0). Other marks from the meet come in at No. 4 (84.73m/278-0.0), No. 7 (83.46m/273-10.0), No. 12 (82.85m/271-10.0) and No. 15 (82.72m/271-4.0).
Peters is one of just two athletes in the five-year history of the national award to earn it in back-to-back weeks and is the first Bulldog to win the SEC honor more than once in the same season.
