STARKVILLE – Due to the threat of inclement weather, Mississippi State's exhibition soccer match with Mississippi College on Thursday has been cancelled. The game will not be rescheduled.
MSU finishes the spring season with a 2-0-1 record after defeating SEC-foe Florida, 3-2, and Southern Miss, 4-3. State drew on the road at Memphis, 1-1. Games with Mississippi College and Arkansas were canceled due to weather.
"We couldn't be happier with the group's commitment this spring," head coach James Armstrong said. "Their ability to take on and apply new information has been very pleasing. They brought a daily intensity to everything they did."
The spring offered plenty for fans to look forward to in head coach James Armstrong's first season this fall. Rising sophomore Niah Johnson collected five points while scoring two goals against Florida. Rising junior Olivia Hernandez scored twice over the spring, and her classmate AK Ward recorded at hat trick in State's final game.
"I truly believe that we laid foundations that we can look forward to building on when we return," Armstrong said. "This is a special group with amazing team chemistry. The staff cannot wait to get back on the field with them soon."
State returns 65 percent of their total points from 2018 (60-of-92). The young squad was tied for the most freshmen in the SEC last year (13) and led the league in percentage of points by freshmen (44.6 percent). The Bulldogs earned their first ranking and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
