STARKVILLE – Three program records were shattered Wednesday night at Nusz Park as Mississippi State softball's (25-14) high-powered offense took down Memphis (21-20), 15-3, in five innings.
As a squad Mississippi State set a single-game record, slugging five home runs in Wednesday's midweek finale at Nusz Park. Fa Leilua went 2-for-4 at the plate, slugging her 19th home run of the season to break State's junior home run record. Sophomore Mia Davidson went 2-for-4 with five RBI as she went yard twice to break her own Mississippi State single-season record with her 19th and 20th home runs of the season.
Sophomore Emily Williams (8-4) earned the victory in the circle as she tossed three innings and allowed three runs off one hits and four walks, while striking out two. Freshman Grace Fagan tossed the final two innings, giving up just three walks and striking out two.
After giving up a lead-off walk to start the game, Williams answered quickly forcing a pop up on a bunt attempt and a strike out, but a Mississippi State fielding error allowed two Tigers to move into scoring position before a walk loaded the bases. A third walk of the inning brought in the first Memphis run to give the Tigers an early lead.
MSU rallied in the home half of the inning as every Bulldog in the batting order reached base in the bottom of the first. Senior Emily Heimberger opened the inning with a lead-off walk before Mia Davidson homered to straight-away center. After a Leilua single through the left side, senior Kat Moore extended the MSU lead to 4-1 with a home run to center.
The Bulldog then loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and two walks before redshirt sophomore Montana Davidson drove in a run with a single to left field. Bevia Robins pushed the lead to 6-1 with a bases-loaded walk.
In her second plate appearance in the inning, Heimberger singled to left field to bring home two runs before a bobble behind the plate allowed Robinson to score on the plate. Mia Davidson plated the final run of the inning with an RBI groundout to third base.
The Bulldogs slugged two more home runs in the bottom of the third, kicked off with Leilua solo shot to left center. After a Moore bunt single, senior Taylor Kelly slugged the first home run of her Bulldog career with a pinch-hit bomb to left field.
The Tigers answered in the top of the fourth as they recorded their lone hit in the game with a two-run home run from Ryleigh Aungst.
With Bevia Robinson on base after a bunt single to third, Mia Davidson made history once more with her second home run of the night and the 20th of her career to break her own single-season record and cap the run-rule victory, 15-3.
RECORDS WERE MEANT TO BE BROKEN
Three program records were shattered Wednesday night as the bomb squad was out in full force.
As a team, Mississippi State slugged five home runs to set a single-game record. The previous record of four was slugged three times, most recently on April 6, 2019 versus No. 7/5 LSU. As a team, Mississippi State has slugged 55 home runs this year, tying the single-season mark that was set last season.
Fa Leilua tallied her 19th home run of the season, breaking All-American Iyhia McMichael's (2004) junior record. Leilua now stands in second place in single-season history behind her teammate Mia Davidson. In just her first season at Mississippi State, Leilua has already slugged the 10th most home runs in school history.
With her fifth multi-home run game of the season, Davidson broke her own single-season record with 20 over her sophomore campaign. One more home run this season will put Davidson in the SEC record book with a seven-way tie for seventh place in single-season home runs.
Davidson now has 39 home runs over her two season at Mississippi State, the second most in school history. She is just five home runs away from tying Kellie Wilkerson (1999-02) for the program record.
ON DECK
Mississippi State returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game series in Knoxville. The series against No. 9/8 Tennessee begins on Friday, April 12 at 5 p.m. CT on the SEC Network +.
