Boseman Shines in Bulldogs’ 9-1 Victory over UT Martin
March 05, 2019 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Behind a phenomenal debut in the circle from freshman Kayla Boseman, Mississippi State softball (15-5) cruised to a 9-1 victory over UT Martin (9-8) on Tuesday night at Nusz Park.
Boseman, making her collegiate debut with a start in the circle, tossed the complete-game victory, allowing just one run off five hits. After a shaky first inning, Boseman retired 10 consecutive Skyhawks. She closed her debut with 11 strikeouts and did not allow a single walk.
Offensively, it was a team effort for State as eight Bulldogs combined for MSU's 14 hits. Sophomore Mia Davidson led the way as she went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Davidson delivered the walk-off victory as he RBI single in the bottom of the sixth drove in the final run.
Sophomore Macey Petrey turned in a two-hit outing and picked up three RBIs for the Bulldogs, while junior Fa Leilua scored twice and tallied two RBIs off of her two hits on Tuesday evening.
UT Martin struck in the top of the first, leading off the inning with an infield single to shortstop from Paige Clark. Clark advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a groundout at second base.
With a ground ball knocked towards the right side of the field, Mississippi State's defense chose to make a play at the plate, but the relay was not in time, giving UTM a 1-0 lead.
MSU answered in the home-half of the inning using a two-out rally to lock up the game. Leilua opened things up with an infield single dropping behind first base. Sophomore Carter Spexarth singled through the left side before MSU loaded the bases with a walk to sophomore O'Neil Roberson. A bases-loaded walk to Petrey drove in the tying run.
The Bulldogs notched its first lead of the game in the bottom of the second, getting two base runners on quickly in the inning with a single through the right side from freshman Anna Kate Segars and a bunt single in front of the plate from junior Candace Denis.
Davidson loaded up the bases with a single to shallow right field. Leilua broke up the game for State with a single up the middle, plating two runs for a 3-1 lead.
With two outs, Roberson loaded the bases up once more with a walk before Petrey singled to left field scoring two more Bulldogs to push MSU's lead to 5-1.
MSU would not score again until the bottom of the fifth. Redshirt sophomore Montana Davidson led off the inning with a walk and was lifted for pinch runner freshman Chloe Morgan. After Morgan moved into scoring position off ground out, junior Lindsey brought her home with a single down the left-field line.
The Bulldogs would load bases with a single to left from Mia Davidson and a UTM error at third base. Redshirt freshman, Brooke Cantillo knocked the first hit of her career with a single through the right side to plate two and push MSU's lead to 8-1.
Petrey led off the sixth inning with a single to right center. The Skyahwks used back-to-back fielder's choices to keep the game-winning run from moving into scoring position, but back-to-back, two-out walks loaded the bases for Mia Davidson. Davidson singled to left field to score Segars and secure the run-rule victory.
