STARKVILLE – After dropping Monday's opening contest to Georgia Tech, junior Alyssa Loza turned in a brilliant pitching performance to shutout Alcorn State as Mississippi State softball (11-4) spilt Monday's doubleheader tilt at Nusz Park to round out The Snowman: Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament.
The Bulldogs turned in a three-run sixth inning against the Yellow Jackets (8-6), but their comeback fell short as Georgia Tech held on for a 6-4 victory to open Monday's action. Against Alcorn State, Loza no-hit the Lady Braves (2-7) through 6.1 innings to record her second shutout of the season with a 6-0 win.
Sophomore Mia Davidson and junior Fa Leilua each recorded a home run over Monday's doubleheader to bring their season total to nine each, which leads the Southeastern Conference.
After a scoreless first inning, Georgia Tech got on the board in the top of the second with a two-run single to center from Cameron Stanford to take early lead in game one. Standford would lead off the fourth inning with a solo home run, the first allowed at Nusz Park by the Bulldog pitching staff, and an RBI double by Tricia Awald to push the Georgia Tech lead to 4-0.
MSU would cut into the Yellow Jacket lead in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of two walks, senior Kat Moore would plate the first Bulldog run of the game with a ground out to second base.
Georgia Tech would respond again in the fifth as a passed ball and EBI single from Kaylee Ellebrach scored two to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-1 advantage.
State's sixth inning rally began with a lead-off home run to left center off the bat of Mia Davidson. After back-to-back singles to center from Leilua and Moore, senior Sarai Niu delivered State's third straight single to center to score pinch runner freshman Anna Kate Segars. Sophomore Carter Spexarth delivered an RBI single to right to plate the third run of the inning to slice Georgia Tech's lead to 6-4.
MSU's attempted to rally again in the bottom of the seventh as senior Bevia Robison led off with a bunt single back to the pitcher. Mia Davidson would slug a double down the left field line, but the relay throw to home was in time to throw Robinson out at the plate. The Yellow Jackets would force back-to-back pop outs to hang on for the victory.
Freshman Grace Fagan was tagged with the loss as she fell to 2-2 on the season. The leftie gave up two runs off five hits with one strikeout over 1.1 inning of work. Sophomore Emily Williams carried the bulk of the game, tossing 5.1 innings in relief.
The Bulldogs wasted no time scoring in Monday's nightcap against Alcorn State. With two out in the bottom of the first, Leilua singled to left center and would score on a Lady Brave error on a pop up to shortstop. State would make Alcorn pay for the miscue with a Niu RBI double to left center to take a 2-0 lead.
MSU would score its final four runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Grace Dabbs led off the inning with a single to center. After swiping second, an errant throw into the outfield allowed Dabbs to each home.
Following a Mia Davidson single, Leiula homered to right center field to push the lead to 5-0. Spexarth's first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field with two outs, would cap the Bulldog scoring.
After allowing a hit by pitch in the first inning, Loza was phenomenal in the circle, retiring 10 consecutive batters before giving up a walk in the top of the fifth. The right-hander would no-hit the Lady Braves until a one-out single to shallow right field in the top of the seventh broke up the no-no bid.
Loza closed the game allowing just one hits, one walk and one hit by pitch while striking out three to record her second shutout of the season. She now stands at 4-1 in the circle.
