PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Sophomore Mia Davidson put on a clinic against 2018 Women's Collge World Series runner-up No. 5 Washington, but her efforts were not enough as No. 25 Mississippi State fell to the Huskies, 7-5, Thursday night inside Nancy Almaraz Field.
In State's second game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, Davidson went 3-for-3 at the plate, slugging three home runs to set Mississippi State's single-game record and was one shy of tying the NCAA's single-game mark. Davidson added a career-high five RBIs on the night and also drew a walk to reach base in every plate appearance.
Davidson now has 24 career home runs to her credit and is just two shy for tying Briana Bell (2008-13) for seventh in program history for career dingers.
Senior Bevia Robinson also turned in a multi-hit performance as she went 2-for-3 2 with a run scored.
Davidson gave the Bulldogs (4-3) the early lead with a solo home run in the top of the first, but the Huskies responded in the top of the second as a Emma Helm two-run double put Washington (5-1) on top. Huskies would tack on five more runs in the second – three unearned - capped with Morganne Flores two-run homer to left center.
Leading off the top of the fourth, Davidson hit her second solo home run of the night with a deep shot to straightaway center to cut the Washington lead to 6-2.
The score would hold until the bottom of the sixth when Washington added a run off an infield single from Flores.
State would rally in the top of the seventh, leading off the inning with back-to-back infield singles from junior Candace Denis and Robinson. Davidson would clear the bases with her record-setting third home run of the night to slice the lead to 7-5, but Gabbie Plain recorded her ninth strikeout to pick up the win for the Huskies.
Sophomore Emily Williams (1-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs off four hits and two walks. She struck out two Huskies in the contest. Freshman Grace Fagan had an impressive outing against the Huskies, tossing the final four innings. She allowed four hits and one unearned run while striking out four.
