STARKVILLE – Right-handed pitcher and power-hitting first basemen Addison Purvis will join the Mississippi State softball program in 2021, head coach Samantha Ricketts has announced.
Purvis was named FCR Player of the Year as a sophomore, junior and senior. She earned first team all-state, all-conference, all-region and all-district honors in every year of her high school career, and was named All-Area Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018.
For her career she drove in 163 runs with 45 home runs, and struck out just 26 times over four years. Her pitching career included 845 strikeouts.
"Addison is another dual-threat athlete that is going to provide depth in the circle and at the plate for us," Ricketts said. "She is a powerful left-handed bat in the lineup that is going to help us replace some of the home runs we will lose to graduation."
The Sullivan, Missouri, native led her team with a .701 batting average this fall while registering 47 hits, including 12 home runs and striking out just five times. In the circle, she struck out 179 batters with a 0.64 WHIP.
"When I watch Addi, compete she represents a Bulldog in everything that she does," Ricketts added. "She is gritty, strong, loves the pressure of big moments and plays with a chip on her shoulder. I can't wait to watch her compete on the biggest stage for Mississippi State."
As a junior she drove in 38 runs on 52 hits while showcasing her dominance in the circle. Of her 23 starts, she went the distance 20 times and compiled a 19-5 record. She held opponents below a .200 batting average while averaging 13.1 strikeouts per game.
The previous season she posted a career high with 13 home runs while driving in 54 runs in 87 at-bats. She won 22 of her 25 starts with a 1.20 ERA and allowed just four extra-base hits.
"The moment I stepped into Starkville, I knew I was home," Purvis said. "I have always wanted to compete at a college that welcomed me like family, and that is how I felt immediately when I arrived. I am so excited for this amazing opportunity with a great organization."
Purvis played travel ball with Top Gun Fastpitch and won the 2017 USSSA National Championship.
Ricketts was elevated to head coach on July 25 after serving as an assistant and associate head coach in Starkville since 2015. The Bulldogs have made an NCAA Regional in all but one of her seasons on staff. State's schedule for her first season at the helm will be released in the coming weeks.
