STARKVILLE – A trio of former Mississippi State All-American defenders were named to the 2020 Pro Bowl rosters this week. Fletcher Cox (2009-11), Chris Jones (2013-15) and Darius Slay (2011-12) were selected for the annual all-star game scheduled for Jan. 26, 2020, in Orlando, Florida.
Cox has been selected to the Pro Bowl in five consecutive seasons, marking the most selections by a defensive tackle in Philadelphia Eagles' history. His five selections are tied for seventh among all Eagles' players, and only two Eagles (Reggie White and Pete Pihos) have put together a longer streak.
The Mississippi native has led a defense that ranks third in the NFL against the run, allowing 90.4 yards per game on the ground. Cox ranks 10th in the NFL in pass rush grade (90.1) this season according to Pro Football Focus (min. 50 percent of snaps).
Slay will make his third straight All-Pro appearance thanks to the respect of his fellow players and coaches. He collected a third of the vote from both groups. Slay ranks 19th in the NFC with 10 pass defenses this year and two interceptions.
The release of this year's rosters marks the first Pro Bowl selection of Jones' career. Since returning from injury in Week 9, he ranks fifth in the NFL in pressures (27) among defensive tackles. Jones is tied for 13th in the AFC with 7.0 sacks and 11th in sack yardage (55.0). His 87.1 pass run grade this season ranks 12th in the league according to Pro Football Focus.
Green Bay Packers linebacker Preston Smith was named an alternate as the leading NFC vote-getter at his position. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was also selected as an alternate. Smith is sixth in the NFL in sacks (11.5), and Prescott ranks second in the league in passing yards (4,334).
