STARKVILLE – Cameron Matthews is the newest addition to the Mississippi State men's basketball program as he inked his National Letters of Intent (NLI) announced Wednesday during the fall signing period.
Matthews will begin his freshman campaign for the Bulldogs in 2020-21. He is joined by ESPN Top 65 recruit Deivon Smith from Loganville, Georgia in the signing class.
"Cameron is an outstanding athlete," head coach Ben Howland said. "I think he can be a really, really special player for our program because of his ability to defend. He's an outstanding passer, a good rebounder and a great competitor."
Matthews, a 6-7 forward from Olive Branch, Mississippi, can play the three and four positions. He is prepping at Olive Branch High School under Eric Rombaugh.
Matthews possesses great handles, can see the floor, attack the rim and knock down open shots. He also is a solid defender who can guard multiple positions, is a strong rebounder and rim protector.
Matthews averaged 11.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.2 blocks per game as a junior. He was named to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen where he was described as a highlight reel waiting to happen in November 2019. His team at Olive Branch posted a 28-4 record and won the school's first state championship in 2017-18 and captured a 5A runner-up finish in 2018-19.
Matthews plays the AAU circuit for Team That and won the Under Armour National Championship last summer. He also played in Mississippi's North/South All-Star Game. Matthews was recruited by Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss and Memphis.
COACH ROMBAUGH ON MATTHEWS
"I believe Cameron will be a strong addition to the Bulldogs. His effort and energy is contagious. He's a tough, hard-nosed player that's willing to sacrifice for the team. I'm excited for Cameron. Coach Howland is a great coach, and he always gets the most out of his teams."
COACH HOWLAND ON 2019-20 SIGNING CLASS

Both players come from outstanding high school programs, and both have been well-coached at the high school level which gives them a real leg up when they come to Mississippi State next season."
