
MSU Closes Out Fall Slate With Sunday Action At Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – To close out the 2019 fall campaign, the Mississippi State women's tennis team wrapped up competition Sunday at the Thunderbird Invitational. The Bulldogs went 11-7 on the weekend, including an undefeated day one on Friday.
State's tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Valeria Nikolaev opened the final day of fall action by knocking off Washington's duo of Natsuho Arakawa and Vanessa Wong 6-3 in doubles. Emma Antonaki and Meredith Roberts fell in a tight 7-5 decision to Sedona Gallagher and Katarina Kopcalic, also of Washington.
In singles, the 41st-ranked Antonaki picked up her second singles win of the weekend as she cruised past Arakawa of Washington 6-3, 6-1.
After taking the first set 6-1 over Washington's Gallagher, Gallagher evened things with a 6-3 second set. The two battled through a close super tiebreaker that would decide the match with Gallagher finally coming out on top 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(8).
No. 115 Adaloglou fell to 75th-ranked Ilze Hattingh of host Arizona State 6-0, 6-1 before Ines Mesquita of Kansas State handed State's Roberts her first loss of the event 6-1, 6-3.
The Thunderbird Invitational marked the Bulldogs' final stop on their 2019 fall schedule. True freshman Marta Falceto led the semester in singles wins with seven. In doubles, Antonaki and rookie Alexandra Mikhailuk paced the team, recording five triumphs.
State will open its spring campaign in January, with its first home match slated for mid-February.
