PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – Mississippi State women's golf fired 1-under par for the final round of the White Sands Invitational at the Ocean Club Golf Course in windy conditions to finish 10th, while freshman Ashley Gilliam led the way for the Bulldogs after posting her third consecutive top-10 finish.
"We finished up just a few shots out of a top-five finish in a top collegiate field," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "We definitely played better today as a team and certainly were able to see some areas we will address for improvement in the offseason."
After shooting 1-under (71) on the first day and 2-under (70) in the final two rounds, Gilliam finished tied for sixth in the invitational. With today's performance, she is now tied for the MSU freshman record for rounds of par or better with 10, matching the mark set by Jessica Peng during the 2013-14 season.
"Overall, our freshman Ashley Gilliam has had a stellar season," said Brown-Lemm. "We need the four and five positions to pick up some shots, and we will be just where we need to be."
Climbing the leaderboard by 25 spots, junior Aubree Jones had another consistent round, shooting 2-under for the day. Jones placed tied 34th in the event after a tough first round.
Tied for 41st, senior Clara Moyano shot 1-over par for the day. Freshman Abbey Daniel shot her best round of the invitational on the final day, placing her tied for 51st, while junior Blair Stockett shot 5-over par and tied for 74th in the field.
Sophomore Lauren Miller, playing the individual position, shot a final score of 77 and placed tied for 68th in the event.
The Bulldogs have completed their fall season and will return to action on Feb. 23 at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Arizona.
