State Falls In 36-13 Decision To No. 2 LSU
October 19, 2019 | Football
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's defense held No. 2 LSU's offense to its lowest scoring output of the season during a 36-13 setback Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium.
The Tigers' (7-0, 3-0 SEC) first nine points of the game came from three consecutive field goals by Cade York in the first and second quarters.
"We played our asses off today, and we fought," said MSU head coach Joe Moorhead. "Was it clean, was it precise, was it what we needed to be against this team? Absolutely not. But I know this – when I'm in that locker room and I look at that team and I saw how we fought; we're going to build off of this one. We're going to take the good things and correct the bad things, and be a football team that continues to fight for the rest of the year.
Trailing 9-0 with 8:33 left in the second quarter, MSU (3-4, 1-3 SEC) raced down the field to get on the scoreboard. Three of the first four plays resulted in 46 yards and three first downs to land the Bulldogs at LSU's 27-yard line. Three plays later, Garrett Shrader found paydirt from 12-yards out to bring score to 9-7.
LSU regained the momentum when Joe Burrow tossed four touchdown passes to four different receivers which enabled the Tigers to stretch their advantage to 36-7 at the 5:36 mark of the third quarter.
Late in the fourth, Shrader completed a 90-yard march, which lasted 2:42. The seven-play scoring drive was highlighted by 70 yards through the air on five passes, with a 24-yard strike to Stephen Guidry in the end zone with 59 seconds remaining in the contest.
Guidry finished with a career-high six receptions and 98 receiving yards which is the highest single game total by a MSU receiver this season.
Shrader amassed a season-high 238 yards through the air as he eclipsed his 209 pass-yard performance at Auburn on Sept. 28. In addition, Shrader rushed for 66 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown on the ground.
Jaquarius Landrews paced the defense with eight total tackles, ignited by three solo stops, while Brian Cole II, Cameron Dantzler, Leo Lewis and Erroll Thompson followed with seven each. The seven stops for Cole II and Dantzler matched their career-highs.
Chauncey Rivers tallied 1.5 sacks, the most of his career, while Leo Lewis recorded one sack and Dantzler added half a sack. With State's three sacks, the Bulldogs have recorded at least one sack in 29 straight games.
State had its FBS-leading streak of 22 straight games with a takeaway come to an end. The Tigers totaled season-lows 36 points and 413 total yards compared to 340 yards of total offense for MSU.
The Bulldogs go back on the road next weekend, travelling to take on Texas A&M (4-3, 2-2 SEC) in College Station. Kickoff time is slated for 11 a.m. CT at A&M's Kyle Field and the game will be televised by the SEC Network.
