Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain of the Week: Tianna Rollins
October 16, 2019 | Football
Kid Captain is a collaboration between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are.
This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain is Tianna Rollins of Jackson.
In early March, five-year-old Tianna endured a three-week bout with fever. She had visits to the ER, an after-hours clinic, and primary care. Multiple tests for flu and strep came back negative. But when blood work showed her counts were dangerously low, her Children's of Mississippi primary care doctor called—after hours—with instructions to take Tianna to the emergency room.
From there, Tianna was admitted into the hospital and remained there for more than two weeks. Her fever lasted for most of her stay in the hospital, with its cause a mystery up until the final week. After ruling out many possible causes, her doctors diagnosed Tianna with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
With Mississippi's only children's hospital and pediatric clinics across the state, Children's of Mississippi doctors work together to care for kids at every step, in every location. Only UMMC can provide this level of help for children like Tianna. In fact, Mississippi State recognizes Children's of Mississippi as their official children's hospital.
Her mom, Laura, says Tianna has responded well to treatment and is now is in remission.
She loves collecting and playing with Shopkins. Tianna also loves watching her favorite YouTube show, "Cookie Swirl C."
Have fun at Saturday's game, Tianna! Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
