MSU Falls To Wolfpack In ITA Kick-Off Weekend Opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mississippi State's women's tennis squad had a tough opening to the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Gainesville, Florida, Saturday, as the Bulldogs (2-1) faltered to North Carolina State (3-0) 4-1 in an afternoon matchup.
State fell behind early, dropping the doubles point with setbacks on courts 1 and 3. The nation's 20th-ranked tandem of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith ousted State's Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun in a 6-1 defeat on the top court. The Wolfpack duo of Bianca Moldovan and Liz Norman then downed MSU's pair of Tamara Racine and Sara Lizariturry at No. 3 to give NSCU the early 1-0 lead. Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Anastasia Rentouli led 5-4 over NC State's 37th-ranked team of Adriana Reami and Amanda Rebol when play was suspended.
In singles, the State rookie Racine dropped the first singles contest to NC State's Norman on court 4, 6-1, 6-0.
State's 55th-ranked Antonaki captured the Bulldogs' only singles triumph over Reami in the second position with a solid 6-1, 7-5 triumph. The Wolfpack went up 3-1 when MSU's Braun stumbled on court 6 - 6-1, 6-0 - to Rebol.
MSU's 56th-ranked Adaloglou put up a fight in the second set against NSCU's 23rd-ranked Rogers, but ultimately fell, 6-1, 6-4 in the clinching match for the Wolfpack.
The remaining two matches were suspended with State's Lizariturry looking to split with NC State's Moldovan down 6-0, 2-5 on court 5. MSU's Rentouli was attempting a comeback as well, trailing 6-1, 2-5 to NCSU's 111th-ranked Smith at No. 3.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will face UCSB in the consolation round Sunday, Jan. 27, at 12 p.m. CT. The Gauchos fell in a tight 4-2 battle to No. 11 host Florida Saturday after snatching the doubles point from the Gators to open the match.
