STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's golf will honor fallen soldier Christopher D. Henderson this season through The Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program (FHMTP).
The FHMTP allows collegiate schools to acknowledge fallen or severely wounded soldiers by carrying a bag displaying the name, rank, and branch of service appropriate to the chosen soldier. At the end of the season, the bag will be used to help raise funds for Folds of Honor, a Women's Golf Coach Association (WGCA) partner. Folds of Honor assists the children and spouses of fallen soldiers monetarily.
MSU's honoree is Army Sergeant First Class Christopher D. Henderson. The Hillsboro, Oregon, native was a part of the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.
SFC Henderson was a part of Task Force Phoenix and set to help train the Afghan National Army when on June 17, 2007, he and two other U.S soldiers died after the Humvee they were in came in contact with an improvised explosive device. He was 35 years old.
SFC Henderson, coming from a military family background, knew a career serving his country was for him from a young age. He was highly skilled at his job, attending multiple schools including Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Air Assault School at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, before finally becoming a Drill Sergeant at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He was deployed multiple times to various places including Kuwait, Egypt, Kosovo, and Bosnia. In January 2007, he was deployed to Afghanistan.
SFC Henderson is survived by his wife, Jen and daughter, Kayley who is a recipient of the Folds of Honor scholarship. Kayley is a sophomore at Mississippi State majoring in anthropology.
The bag honoring SFC Henderson will be carried by a team member at each tournament during the spring season.
