Know Your Bulldog: Aric Holman
September 24, 2018 | Men's Basketball
by McRae Clay, Student Assistant
According to Aric Holman, a leader is someone who sets the tone, and does the right thing on and off the floor. Holman, a senior for the Bulldog men's basketball squad, strives every day to do just that no matter what environment he is in.
Holman's athletic career began at a very young age, but unlike some of his teammates his career got its start on the baseball diamond. It began with a bat and long hot summers on a pitcher's mound. It wasn't until the now-6-foot-11 forward hit a growth spurt that he decided to give basketball a shot.
"It just kind of made sense that I should be playing basketball," Holman said. "But I wasn't really taking it super seriously until high school. Then, I got serious about it and God blessed me."
Holman's family has always been extremely supportive, no matter what sport he was playing. The Owensboro, Kentucky native credits his family for inspiration when things get tough.
Holman said, "At the end of the day, I have been placed in a position that could potentially benefit [my family]. I'm just trying to work hard and take advantage of my opportunity."
All of the hard work Holman put in has led to some great individual accomplishments over his first three years as a Bulldog. He led the team in dunks last year and was second in scoring average, but the success of the team as a whole has always been his ultimate focus.
"I know it is going to be a great year. We are going to have a lot of fun and enjoy it as it comes," Holman said. "Building that brotherhood and trust off the floor is really beneficial when we are playing together."
Looking back on how much he has grown in his previous seasons donning the maroon and white, Holman says his confidence level is at an all-time high. In previous years, Holman always felt like he had to create opportunities for his teammates. Now, his skill-set has matured enough that he can hold his own on the floor.
His teammates have helped instill that confidence, including sophomore KeyShawn Feazell.
"Aric has earned everyone's respect in the locker room because of his hard work and dedication to the team," Feazell said. "He is someone a lot of the guys look up to."
When his playing days in Humphrey Coliseum come to a close, Holman hopes to leave a lasting legacy.
"I want to be remembered for what I did in the community, for my impact on the floor and my leadership," commented Holman, "which hopefully will leave an impact on young people."
