NEW ORLEANS – After making a statement in his return game at Davis Wade Stadium, senior Nick Fitzgerald was one of eight quarterbacks selected as a Manning Award Star of the Week, the organization announced.
Fans can visit the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for Fitzgerald. Voting closes at 11 a.m. CT Thursday. The top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Fitzgerald accounted for six touchdowns – one shy of his SEC and school record – to go along with 250 yards of total offense in No. 14 Mississippi State's 56-10 victory over Louisiana. The Richmond Hill, Georgia, native became the first SEC player to record at least four rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns and 100 yards rushing in the same game since he did it two seasons ago against Arkansas on Nov. 19, 2016.
Rushing for over 100 yards for the second straight game, Fitzgerald became the first SEC player to record four rushing scores in a game since Auburn's Kerryon Johnson had five against Missouri on Sept. 23, 2017. Fitzgerald also joined Auburn's Peyton Barber and Tre Mason as the only SEC players in the last 20 seasons with multiple games of four touchdowns rushing.
Fitzgerald also completed 14 of 21 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns. It was his most passing yards since Nov. 19, 2016. Accounting for 43 total passing touchdowns in his career, Fitzgerald surpassed Tyler Russell (2010-13) for second all-time in MSU history.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Fitzgerald was one of 30 quarterbacks selected to the Manning Award Watch List earlier this year. The 10 finalists for the honor will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 29. The winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
