STARKVILLE – Mississippi State soccer improved to 5-0-0 on Thursday night with a 2-0 win against Central Arkansas. Freshman Zakirah McGillivary and senior Carly Mauldin scored for MSU.
Â
"It wasn't our best 90 minutes, but we scored a couple of great goals," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "We didn't give them much. I am happy with winning the game, and I think we'll be better for it."
Â
In the 19th minute, McGillivary dribbled in behind the defense and shot low past the keeper to put the Bulldogs on the board. State has now scored first in every game this season.
Â
Seven minutes later, freshman Miranda Carrasco played a long ball over the defense for Mauldin. The senior beat the keeper to the ball with her head at the top of the box and watched her shot trickle into the net out of reach.
Â
"What a beautiful goal," Anagnost said. "That's as good as it gets. Carrasco clipped it in perfectly. Mauldin timed it, and it was like poetry. I loved it."
Â
The Bulldogs held the Bears to just two shots in the match after entering the match averaging just 7.8 shots allowed per game. MSU has never finished a season allowing fewer than 10.0 per game.
Â
Redshirt senior Rhylee DeCrane picked up her fourth shutout of the season, tying her for seventh all-time in single-season shutouts. The win also marked just the second time in program history that MSU has shutout four of its first five opponents.
