Brown-Lemm Unveils Challenging Women’s Golf Schedule
July 30, 2018 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Trips to locales around the country and Mexico, as well as co-hosting the second Magnolia Invitational highlight Mississippi State's 2018-19 women's golf schedule.
The Magnolia Invitational highlights a five-tournament fall slate that will prepare ninth-year head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm's Bulldogs, who bring in three talented freshman to compliment an experienced group of returnees, for four tournaments in the spring.
"We have an excellent schedule set up for this season," Brown-Lemm said. "A balanced test of difficulty, strength and golf courses all over North America will make this season special. We have some powerful things happening with the program, a new assistant coach (Kortnie Maxoutopoulis) and a young team that is even stronger. We also are adding three freshmen that are expected to come in and make an immediate impact on the team. We are very excited to see what this season has in store."
Brown-Lemm's squad opens the year Sept. 15-16 with a long trek to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the Mary Fossom Invitational. The two-day event is set to be played at the Forest Acres West Golf Course, where Michigan State will be the host team.
Two weeks later (Sept. 28-30), the Bulldogs head to a familiar course to compete in the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla. The Bulldogs have historically fared well in the event, winning the 2014 edition as well as recording a record 54-hole low score of 22-under 818 at the Belmar Golf Club.
The Schooner Fall Classic serves as a final tune-up before MSU heads to its home course, Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, for the second Magnolia Invitational. This year's event, co-hosted with Ole Miss, is set for October 14-16 with free admission to the public. The Bulldogs look to build on last season's Magnolia Invitational when they registered a season-best fourth-place finish.
After showcasing one of the top golf courses in the Southeast, Brown-Lemm's squad wraps October in San Marcos, Texas, at the Jim West Challenge. MSU returns to the event, contested Oct. 28-29 at Kissing Tree Golf Club, for the first time since the 2015 squad claimed a 10th-place finish.
The Bulldogs wrap up the fall portion of the season Nov. 2-4 with a return trip to San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico, for the Battle at the Beach. MSU looks to conquer the Club Campestre course and post a second-straight Top-10 finish in the Baylor-hosted event.
MSU tees off the spring slate Feb. 25-26 in Peoria, Ariz., at the Westbrook Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The Bulldogs return to Arizona March 15-17 as they challenge Mesa's Longbow Golf Club in the Notre Dame's Clover Cup.
State ventures back to the South March 23-25 to compete in Auburn's Evans Derby Experience. The Bulldogs then head to Macon, Ga. to wrap the regular season in the Brickyard Collegiate (April 8-9).
The Brickyard College serves as MSU's final preparation for the SEC Championship, which will contested April 17-21 at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham.
