Javelin Throwers Shine in Third Week of Summer Competition
July 02, 2018 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Add another title for Mississippi State's javelin corps.
Nicolas Quijera and Curtis Thompson both took home medals in summer competition over the weekend. Quijera won the Mediterranean Games with a throw of 75.13m (246-6). The Bulldogs have now won seven javelin medals in five major championships this year (Commonwealth Games, SEC Championships, NCAA Championships, USATF Championships and Mediterranean Games).
Thompson represented "JavU" at the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation's American JavFest in Pennsylvania. Despite redshirting the season to recover from injury, the 2016 NCAA champion won the U.S. title at the USATF Championships a week ago. He came up just short of back-to-back golds this week, finishing second with a mark of 73.85m (242-3).
NCAA 800m runner-up Marco Arop ran at the Harry Jerome International Classic in Vancouver earlier in the week. Arop won the international division of the 800m with a time of 1:47.09, passing athletes from the United States and China along the way.
More international competition lies ahead at the Canadian Championships on July 5-7. Arop, along with sophomore Kenya Small, will go head-to-head with MSU's school record holder, Brandon McBride, in the 800m. Sprinter Karson Kowalchuk is also set to run the 200m.
Quijera will throw at the Spanish Junior Championships on July 7 before appearing at the Spanish National Championships on July 21.
Thompson will represent the United States at the Athletics World Cup in London on July 14-15. Each nation was allowed to select only one male and one female athlete for each event.
The summer will close in August at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Games in Toronto and the European Championships in Berlin.
