Mississippi State Women See Season End in Eugene on Thursday
June 07, 2018 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Sometimes it's just not your day.
That's all senior Rhianwedd Price-Weimer could say to describe the final race of her college career. The 2015 national champion clocked a 4:21.72 to place 22nd in the 1500m semifinals at the NCAA Championships on Thursday.
"It's just a lot of regret during that race," Price-Weimer said. "I tried to give it my all, but it just wasn't my day today. I don't know what was wrong, but I just didn't feel the way I usually do. From the gun, I just couldn't seem to go with them."
The Llandrindod, Wales, native had only run over 4:20.00 twice in her career before today's race. Her heat went out quickly and was stocked with seven of the top eight women in the nation this season.
"I knew the field I was going up against was super hard and tough people," she said. "I wish them all luck for the finals. They are great athletes."
Price-Weimer holds eight times inside the school's Top Five in various outdoor events. Indoors, she can boast another seven. Both are the most of any Bulldog, man or woman, on the 2018 roster.
"Even though her last meet didn't end like we wanted, we could not have asked for more out of her MSU career," distance coach Houston Franks said. "A national title, multiple SEC titles, and several times over an All-American in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track. Most importantly, she has represented our university and our program with great class, sportsmanship, and integrity."
MSU also ran the 4x400m relay on Thursday evening. Alon Lewis, Monica Mosley, Riley White and Keturah Smith placed 22nd with a time of 3:40.48.
"I'm so incredibly proud of them," relays coach Chris Woods said. "On paper, we weren't supposed to be here. We weren't supposed to score at the conference meet, weren't supposed to make it to regionals, weren't supposed to make it here, and they finished 22nd in the country. I've never been more proud of one of our women's groups."
The Bulldog quartet posted the second- and fourth-fastest times in school history this season.
State will wrap up the NCAA Championships tomorrow when Marco Arop runs in the men's 800m final at 8:44 p.m. CT.
