STARKVILLE, Miss. – After redshirting the collegiate season to recover from injury, Curtis Thompson added another national title to his name over the weekend.
The 2016 NCAA Champion in the javelin won the event at the USATF Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, with a 75.99m (249-3) throw on his fourth attempt. He led from his very first throw, which traveled 74.55m (244-7) then improved to 75.77m (248-7) before eventually recording his winning mark.
"I came in with the plan to compete and try to win like any other time," Thompson said. "But I was really looking to get back out there pain free and just do all I did the whole year in practices to let it pay off."
Another redshirting Bulldog returned to competition as 2018 SEC Indoor High Jump Champion Logan Boss represented MSU in Des Moines. Boss cleared 1.86m (6-1.25) to place fourth.
"Of course I would love to jump higher, but considering I haven't competed since the indoor season, I was impressed and happy with how everything felt," she said. "I don't have anything negative to say about being the fourth-best in the U.S. That's better than I placed last year, and I think I've learned and improved a lot since then."
Senior school-record-holder Ro'Derick Spears ran the 110m hurdles but did not qualify for the semifinals. Spears clocked in at 14.04 (14.036) which was good for 17th place, missing the next round by one one-thousandth of a second as Oregon's Braxton Canady qualified with a time of 14.04 (14.035).
Former Bulldog Erica Bougard also brought home hardware from the USATF Championships, winning the national heptathlon title with 6,347 points while winning three of the seven events along the way.
Meanwhile, in Canada, sophomore Karson Kowalchuk ran at the Athletics Ontario Championships, winning the 200m in 20.72.
Edmonton, Alta., native Marco Arop will compete in the international 800m at the Harry Jerome Classic in Vancouver, B.C., this week. Arop's race is scheduled for Wednesday, June 27 at 9:06 p.m. CT.
He and Kowalchuk are also scheduled to compete at the Canadian Junior Championships next week in Ottawa, Ont., on July 5-8.
