STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State's JT Mackay and Nicolas Quijera have been selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team and will be up for selection to the Academic All-America team.
"Nico and JT have put an incredible amount of work in in the classroom this year," head coach Steve Dudley said. "We had may deserving nominees, but these two have truly excelled in their studies to impress the voters."
Mackay is a junior finance major, boasting a 4.00 GPA. The Dayton, Ohio, native has been named to the President's List and earned Top Dawgs Honors with a 4.00 GPA in each of the last three semesters. He was named to the SEC Spring Honor Roll in 2017 and First-Year Honor Roll for 2015-16.
"It's a tremendous honor, and I'm extremely grateful to have been selected," Mackay said. "Classwork is extremely important to me as I know the content we cover will directly prepare me for the rest of my life."
On the track, Mackay broke his personal best in the 10,000m at the Penn Relays this season, shaving 23 seconds off his previous best. At the SEC Championships, he placed 15th in the 10,000m.
"I thoroughly enjoy all my classes and professors, and I'd like to thank them for being so accommodating with my athletic schedule," Mackay added. "I also would like to thank the entire coaching staff for continuing to put a huge emphasis on classroom performance along with athletic performance."
Quijera was also named the SEC Men's Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year ahead of the conference championships where the javelin thrower took home a bronze medal. He graduated in early May with a degree in economics with a 3.89 GPA after earning a spot on the President's List and Bulldog Honor Roll in every semester of his career.
"School is half of my life," Quijera said. "I have two focuses in my life right now: track and school. I want to succeed in both."
The Pamplona, Spain, native will compete at the NCAA Championships next week after finishing second at the NCAA East Prelims last weekend. He has never finished lower than sixth at any meet in his career and was the national runner-up in the javelin last year.
