CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite dropping the doubles point, the 31st-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (16-10) rallied in singles for a 4-2 triumph against No. 46 William & Mary (17-10) Friday in 2018 NCAA First Round action at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center to advance to Saturday's second round.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs will face top-ranked and second-seeded host North Carolina, a 4-0 winner over Morgan State on Friday. The winner between MSU and UNC will advance to the NCAA round of 16 in Winston-Salem, N.C., May 17. State will be looking to achieve its first-ever round of 16 appearance.
With Friday's victory, MSU is now 6-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Championship in its eight appearances all-time.
"It was a great battle today and in the end, we earned a win over a good team," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "They took it to us in doubles and we didn't respond well. I am proud of the way we bounced back after a disappointing performance in doubles. This team has done a great job all year of competing hard for wins. I know they are excited for our opportunity tomorrow."
Friday's match started with a tight battle for the doubles point. On court 2, W&M's Rosie Cheng and Olivia Thaler down Bulldogs Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun 6-2. At No. 1, the Tribe pair of Lauren Goodman and Clara Tanielian held off a late surge by State's 49th-ranked Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak 6-4 to clinch the doubles point and give W&M an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs rebounded in singles to take four of the six first sets against the Tribe. First off the courts and would cruise to straight-set wins at the No. 4-6 positions to lead 3-2.
MSU's Sara Lizariturry made quick work of W&M Thaler 6-1, 6-2. Following close behind at No. 4, the State true freshman Adaloglou posted a straight set – 6-2, 6-4 – triumph against the Tribe's Goodman to give State its first lead of the day at 2-1.
After W&M responded with its own straight-set win on court 3, where Tanielian defeated the Maroon & White's Anastasia Rentouli 6-2, 6-1, MSU grabbed its second lead of the day when the senior Vozniak won for the eighth time in her last nine matches, holding off W&M's Ekaterina Stepanova 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5.
With two matches remaining, both in the third set, State's Braun rallied for a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 triumph against the Tribe's Natalia Perry on court 2 to clinch the 4-2 victory for the Bulldogs, coming back from down 3-2 and a break in the final set for the win.
The remaining match was suspended with W&M's Cheng holding a 6-7(7), 6-4, 3-0 lead against MSU's Harrison on court 1.
