LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Fresh off being named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, Mississippi State catcher Mia Davidson was announced as one of 10 finalists for the 2018 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I National Freshman of the Year, the NFCA announced Thursday.
Davidson is just one of two freshmen from the SEC to advance as one of the 10 finalists for the award, joining Arkansas' Mary Haff.
Starting all 56 games this season, Davidson has led Mississippi State and one of the best starts in program history as the Bulldogs check in with a 36-20 record after knocking off Texas A&M, 2-0, in the opening round of the SEC Championship to earn MSU's first tournament win since 2005.
Primarily playing behind the plate, Davidson has displayed her ability to frame pitches and her cannon of an arm, totaling three pick offs and throwing out 10 would-be base stealers this season.
At the dish, Davidson is just as impressive as she is the lone Bulldog to record 45 or more hits, runs scored and RBIs this season as she leads MSU in all three categories. Through 56 games this season, Davidson holds a team-leading .377 average with the help of 66 hits.
Davidson leads the entire SEC with a .783 slugging percentage with the help of 13 doubles, two triples and a conference-leading 18 doubles, which has tied MSU's single-season record. She has also driven in 46 runs over her debut season. The Hillsborough, N.C. native has recorded 15 walks and 10 hit by pitches to help hold a .450 on-base percentage.
Her numbers not only have Davidson leading the Bulldog squad, but her impressive rookie season has launched Davidson as one of the top sluggers in the conference as she leads the SEC in slugging percentage, home runs and total bases (137).
The top three finalists for the award will be revealed on Wednesday, May 23. The award will be presented on Tuesday, May 29 before the start of the 2018 Women's College World Series.
Davidson and the No. 25 Bulldogs are back in action this morning during the second round of the SEC Championship in Columbia, Mo. MSU will take on No. 12 South Carolina at 11 a.m. CT on the SEC Network with a date in Friday's semifinal at stake.
